Finding Direction Through StreetwYze: JD’s Journey

FARE's StreetwYze programme supports young people to build confidence, develop life skills and make positive choices about their future through practical activities, trusted relationships and personalised support.

JD, now 16, has been connected to FARE Scotland since Primary 1. From an early age, school was a challenge. He found it difficult to concentrate, regularly clashed with teachers and gradually became disengaged from education. By high school, his attendance had dropped significantly and he had begun spending time with older peer groups, becoming involved in anti-social behaviour.

Throughout this period, FARE maintained close contact with JD and his family. Through after-school clubs, sports sessions and weekend trips, staff provided consistent support and positive opportunities to stay connected. When JD needed practical support, FARE stepped in. Most importantly, he had trusted adults around him who listened without judgement and provided a safe space where he could be himself.

At 15, JD joined a personal development programme through StreetwYze. The programme focused on teamwork, confidence and life skills through practical, hands-on activities. Through his participation, JD began to see himself differently. He developed confidence in his abilities, learned to manage his temper more effectively, took greater responsibility for his actions and became more comfortable working with others.

The programme helped JD recognise his strengths and consider new possibilities for the future.

Today, JD has completed a short construction skills course and is applying for college to study joinery. He is also volunteering at youth sessions, giving back to the community that has supported him throughout his journey.

His story demonstrates the impact that long-term support, trusted relationships and targeted youth work can have in helping young people overcome challenges, develop confidence and work towards positive futures.
