Introduction
Families are the heart of our communities, yet many face challenges that make progression difficult. Our Supporting Families: Overcoming Barriers to Progression programme is designed to change that narrative. It is more than an employability project; it is a holistic, person-centred approach that empowers parents and families to create sustainable futures.
A Holistic Approach to Change
Unlike traditional employability programmes, this initiative focuses on the whole family. It is organic and shaped by the ideas and needs of parents themselves. By listening to families, we create opportunities that truly matter, whether that is training, education, or pathways to self-employment.
Managed by Clyde Gateway and delivered through FARE Scotland, the programme aims to break cycles of poverty and create lasting impact. Sustainable employment means more than a job; it means financial stability, improved well-being, and brighter futures for children.
Real Stories, Real Impact
The video showcases inspiring journeys of families who have embraced this programme:
• Soran arrived to Scotland in 2023 and, with support, completed both Level 5 and Level 6 qualifications. While exploring the opportunity to become a gas engineer, a new opportunity arose for him to work as an interpreter. Soran embraced this path and is now building his client base and creating stability that will benefit his entire family.
• Laura was introduced to the programme through her local Job Centre. She completed both the employability course and the health and wellbeing course, strengthening her confidence and skills. Laura is now receiving support from Business Gateway as she works toward launching her own online business.
• Friba, originally from Afghanistan, faced language barriers and isolation when she first arrived. Through ESOL classes, community events, and the relationships she has built within the programme, she has grown in confidence and connection. Currently studying ESOL, she hopes to return to teaching and eventually become an ESOL tutor herself.
• Abdul, a mother of six, completed an employability course and a Women in Business course. She has since moved into employment, bringing significant benefits to her household, all while continuing to work toward her long-term goal of owning her own business.
These stories reflect the programme’s power to build confidence, skills, and hope.
Breaking Barriers, Building Futures
The most rewarding part of this work is seeing people overcome barriers and achieve goals they have long dreamed of. In areas like Glasgow’s East End, where stereotypes and poverty persist, this programme is helping families rewrite their stories.
